President Bola Tinubu has signed into law a bill establishing the Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET) in Ogoni, Rivers State. The institution will be located in Tai, an Ogoni town, and aims to empower the Ogoni community by providing educational opportunities and fostering sustainable development.
During the signing ceremony at the State House in Abuja, President Tinubu emphasized the significance of this development in addressing environmental justice and promoting education. He stated, “Today marks a significant milestone in our national journey towards environmental justice, education, and sustainable development. The Ogoni have been at the forefront of our development and agitation and have suffered enough environmental degradation.”
The President highlighted that the university would serve as a center of excellence, equipping young Nigerians with the knowledge and skills to tackle environmental challenges, drive clean energy solutions, and contribute to sustainable economic development. He also expressed gratitude to the National Assembly for its role in passing the bill and commended the Ogoni delegation for their steadfast advocacy.
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, noted that FUET will prioritize interdisciplinary programs in environmental science, clean energy, and sustainable technology, preparing students to address both regional and national ecological issues. National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, added that the establishment of the university addresses long-standing concerns and efforts to restore Ogoniland, emphasizing the need for inclusive development and environmental sustainability in the region.
Senator Mpigi Barinada, leading the Ogoni delegation, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for signing the bill and acknowledged the contributions of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and NSA Ribadu in facilitating its passage. He described the university’s establishment as a beacon of hope for the Ogoni community and an encouragement to embrace peace.
