President Bola Tinubu has reappointed Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd.) as Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for a second five-year term, extending his leadership of the agency until 2031. The announcement was made by presidential adviser Bayo Onanuga in a statement on X.
Marwa, first appointed in January 2021 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, previously chaired the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse between 2018 and 2020. A former military governor of Lagos and Borno states, he is a graduate of the Nigerian Military School and the Nigerian Defence Academy, and holds postgraduate degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and Harvard University.
The presidency praised Marwa’s performance at the NDLEA, highlighting major drug seizures, nationwide anti-drug campaigns, and the arrest of more than 73,000 drug traffickers. The agency has also confiscated over 15 million kilogrammes of illicit drugs during his tenure.
President Tinubu described the reappointment as a reaffirmation of trust in Marwa’s leadership and urged him to intensify efforts to combat drug trafficking. “Do not relent in tracking the merchants of hard drugs out to destroy our people, especially the young ones,” Tinubu said.
