At least nine people were killed and more than 25 injured on Tuesday after a shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia, Canadian authorities have confirmed.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said seven people died at the school, while two others were found dead at a nearby home linked to the incident. A woman believed to be the shooter also died from a self-inflicted injury. Two of the injured victims were airlifted to hospital in critical condition.

The attack took place in Tumbler Ridge, a town of about 2,700 residents in the Canadian Rockies, more than 1,000 kilometres north of Vancouver. The school serves around 175 students in Grades 7 to 12. School shootings are rare in Canada.

British Columbia Premier David Eby said police arrived at the scene within two minutes. Video footage showed students leaving the school with their hands raised as security forces secured the area.

RCMP Superintendent Ken Floyd said investigators have identified a female suspect but declined to release her name. He added that the motive remains unclear and investigations are ongoing.

Mayor Darryl Krakowka described the incident as devastating for the close-knit community, while religious and community leaders have been supporting grieving families.

Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and suspended planned official trips. He praised first responders for their bravery and extended condolences to the victims’ families.

The shooting is Canada’s deadliest since 2020, when a gunman killed 13 people in Nova Scotia. Authorities say further details will be released as investigations continue.
