Former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, has reiterated the need for purposeful leadership and national unity following a high-level consultation with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja.
In a statement shared after the meeting, Obi disclosed that he visited Jonathan alongside notable South-East leaders as part of ongoing consultations with key Nigerian stakeholders ahead of the 2027 general elections. He explained that the engagement focused not only on the upcoming polls but also on the broader future of the country.
Obi described the discussions as frank and forward-looking, stressing that Nigeria is at a critical juncture marked by economic hardship, worsening insecurity, and increasing social divisions. He noted that such challenges require leaders across regions to come together in the interest of national progress.
According to him, the country urgently needs leadership anchored on competence, character, capacity, and compassion rather than personal ambition. He emphasized that governance should prioritize value creation and productivity, calling for a shift from a consumption-driven economy to one that effectively harnesses Nigeria’s human and natural resources.
The former presidential candidate further stated that the 2027 elections should be viewed as an opportunity to reset the nation’s trajectory, highlighting the importance of improving education, supporting entrepreneurs, and ensuring security for citizens.
Obi expressed optimism that through sincere dialogue and unity of purpose, Nigeria can overcome its challenges and achieve sustainable development, reaffirming his belief in the possibility of a better nation.
