Global ride-hailing company Uber has announced plans to immediately cease operations in Nigeria and Uganda following a review of its business.

Uber, which began operations in Nigeria in 2014 and Uganda in 2016, has faced pressure from drivers over low fares, high operating costs and commission charges, as well as growing competition from rival platforms.

The company’s exit means it will now operate in only four African countries — Egypt, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa. Uber said the decision was limited to Nigeria and Uganda and would not affect its operations elsewhere in Africa.

The company also recently withdrew from Ivory Coast and Tanzania. It said it would support affected drivers and employees, while its help centres in Nigeria and Uganda will remain open until September 23 to address outstanding issues.
