At least 43 suspected oil thieves have reportedly died after inhaling toxic petroleum fumes during an illegal loading operation at Okari Jetty in Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The incident occurred early Thursday when more than 200 youths allegedly stormed the jetty to siphon petroleum products from an illegally tapped pipeline. A community source said the fumes choked victims, causing some to collapse into the river, while others escaped with severe respiratory complications. The police confirmed the incident, saying investigations are ongoing to establish the exact number of casualties and circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria) confirmed at least 37 deaths and said several others remained missing. The group called for a Joint Investigation Visit by NOSDRA and urged authorities to strengthen pipeline security while providing alternative livelihoods for youths involved in artisanal oil activities.
