Liberia’s electoral commission on Sunday announced that former international footballer, George Opong Weah and the country’s Vice President ,Joseph Boakai will face a presidential run-off on November 7 to determine who succeeds Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
With ballots from over 95 percent of polling stations counted, Weah is in the lead with 39.0 percent of the votes while Boakai has 29.1 percent. Both fell short of the 50 percent required by law for an outright win from the first round of voting held on October 10.
The country’s National Elections Commission Chairman, Jerome Korkoya while announcing the results said 1,550,923 votes had been counted. He also revealed that the turnout was at 74.52 percent across the West African nation.
The three other candidates who took a significant chunk of the votes: Charles Brumskine (9.8%), Alexander Cummings (7.1%) and Prince Johnson (7.0%) may decide on whose side the pendulum swings as they will decide whom their supporters will follow during the second round of voting..
