The battle for the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party took a new turn today at the party’s national secretatriat in Abuja. Supporters of the two sides contending the chairmanship, Ahmed Makarfi and Ali Modu Sheriff, resorted to exchange of blows, shoving, pushing and even small wrestling bouts to settle scores.

Supporters of Makarfi were already at the Secretariat as early as 7:00 am. They effectively took possession of the main gate and displayed the same banners they carried yesterday. The banners declared that Sheriff was an agent of the APC and that PDP youths would never allow him to have his way.

The Ali Modu Sheriff supporters arrived the secretariat singing, drumming and dancing with placards declaring that Sheriff was the authentic Chairman of the PDP. Their placards also asserted that Sheriff was the legally recognised Chairman and that PDP must be governed by the rule of law.

It was not long however before the Modu Sheriff group was overwhelmed by the sheer numerical size of the Ahmed Makarfi side. Makarfi’s supporters effectively chased away Sheriff’s group.

Signs that the two sides were heading for a clash showed yesterday when the two sides staged protests at the secretariat. Each of them demanded that their man be recognised as the authentic chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party.

The clash at the party’s secretariat came hours after a meeting between the party’s Board of Trustees, the Caretaker Committee led by Ahmed Makarfi and PDP governors.
