The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan renewed his disagreement with American President, Donald Trump on Monday when he suggested that there would be no rolling out the red carpet when Trump goes visiting.

The British Prime Minister, Theresa May had in January, officially invited Trump to a state visit in the UK but the trip has been delayed till 2018 due to fears of  large-scale protests  should Trump honour the invitation.

“State visits are different from a normal visit and at a time when the President of the USA has policies that many in our country disagree with, I am not sure it is appropriate for our government to roll out the red carpet,” Khan told CNN.

“If you somehow think it is not possible to be a Muslim and a proud westerner I am happy to disabuse you of that idea, whether you are a reporter for CNN or Donald Trump,” he added.

Relationship between both men had gotten off to a bumpy start after Khan opposed Trump’s travel ban policy which he claimed targeted people from mainly Muslim countries.

After that, Khan’s reassurance to Londoners that there was no reason for them to be alarmed by the presence of security operatives after the London Bridge terror attack, drew extraordinary rebuke and condemnation from Trump on Twitter.

Earlier this year, more than 1.8 million people in the UK signed a petition seeking to block Trump’s UK visit over fears that it would “cause embarrassment to Her Majesty the Queen”.
