
Kenya’s main opposition leader, Raila Odinga on Wednesday told his supporters that he will be sworn – in as the country’s president on December 12, 2017.
The announcement comes a day after the inauguration of President Uhuru Kenyatta who was sworn in as Kenya’s President for a second term in office.
Supporters of Kenyatta who emerged victorious in the October 26 poll with 98 percent of the votes after Odinga’s boycott, have called on the opposition to engage in dialogue and move on.
But opposition supporters who are mainly from the poorer parts of the country view such talk of unity as tantamount to a surrender. At a lavish inauguration held at the Sport Stadium in the capital, Nairobi and attended by the heads of many African nations, Kenyatta said he would devote his five years in office to building bridges and urged Kenyans to “liberate themselves from the baggage of past grievances, and keep to the rule of law.”
