The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Ahmad Ahmad was on Thursday morning arrested at a hotel in Paris, the French capital where he was staying to attend the FIFA Congress.
Reports say Ahmad was arrested around 8:30 am at the Berri Hotel and detained for questioning by officers of the Central Office for the Fight Against Corruption, Financial and Fiscal Offenses (L’Office Central de Lutte Contre La Corruption et Les Infractions Financières et Fiscales (OCLIF).
French newspaper, Jeune Afrique reports that the arrest could be linked to the contract unilaterally broken by CAF with the German equipment manufacturer, Puma to engage with Technical Steel, a company based in La Seyne-sur-Mer, France.
According to a petition by Amr Fahmy, the former Secretary General of CAF, the contract which he claimed was allegedly favoured by the proximity between Ahmad and one of the heads of the French company was inflated by an additional $830,000.
However, Ahmad had in April defended the contract, stating that ‘all decisions were made collegially and were transparent.
