The United States House Judiciary Committee has announced two articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump.
The first article revealed by committee chief Jerry Nadler accuses Trump of abuse of power and the second accuses him of obstructing Congress.
The president is said to have withheld aid to Ukraine for his personal political reasons but Trump has insisted that he is innocent.
If the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee votes to approve the articles later this week, they will then be submitted to the full House of Representatives for a full vote. If the articles are approved by the House, an impeachment trial in the Senate will take place.
A Senate vote requires a two-thirds majority to convict and remove the president which is highly unlikely to happen as President Trump’s Republican Party controls the Senate.
Only two US presidents in history, Bill Clinton and Andrew Johnson, have been impeached. Neither of them was convicted and were therefore not removed from office.
