The 36 state governors of Nigeria have asked the National Assembly to suspend all activities related to the Control of Infectious Diseases Bill, 2020.
Chairman of the forum and governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi stated this after the 8th teleconference meeting with his colleagues.
The governors, at the 8th COVID-19 teleconference of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) raised concerns that they were not consulted on the bill despite being at the forefront of efforts to contain the coronavirus pandemic.
The governors also established a committee comprising the governors of Katsina, Sokoto and Plateau to lead a consultative meeting with the leadership of the National Assembly on the proposed bill.
The governors also pledged to increase the availability of isolation beds to at least 300 per state and accelerate the procurement of additional personal protective equipment PPE, and train health workers in the states to contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
