
The Nigerian Senate has passed a bill against sexual harassment in tertiary institutions after its third reading. The bill has come against the backdrop of public outcry over incidences of sexual harassment and exploitation of female students in Nigeria’s higher institutions by their teachers.
The bill titled, “A Bill for an Act to prevent, prohibit and redress sexual harassment of students in tertiary educational institutions and for matters concerned therewith, 2019,” was sponsored by by the Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege.
According to the bill, any person who commits the offence of sexual harassment of students shall on conviction be sentenced to imprisonment for 14 years or to a fine of N5million or both.
