In a significant development, President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria has initiated a major shakeup in the country’s security apparatus, replacing all service chiefs and top officials with immediate effect, just three weeks after assuming office. This unexpected move, aimed at bolstering national security, was announced by Willie Bassey, the Director of Information on behalf of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume.

The list of those affected by this unprecedented decision includes Alkali Usman, who was relieved of his duties as the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Lucky Irabor, who was dismissed as the Chief of Defence Staff, Faruk Yahaya, who retired as the Chief of Army Staff, Awwal Gambo, who was removed as the Chief of Naval Staff, and Isiaka Amao, who retired as the Chief of Air Staff.

To fill these crucial positions, President Tinubu has appointed new service chiefs, with a notable addition being Nuhu Ribadu, former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), who will now serve as the National Security Adviser (NSA), replacing Babagana Monguno.

The revised list of appointments includes Maj. Gen. C.G Musa as the Chief of Defence Staff, Maj. Gen T. A Lagbaja as the Chief of Army Staff, Rear Admiral E. A Ogalla as the Chief of Naval Staff, AVM H.B Abubakar as the Chief of Air Staff, DIG Kayode Egbetokun as the Acting Inspector-General of Police, and Maj. Gen. EPA Undiandeye as the Chief of Defense Intelligence.

Additionally, Adeniyi Adewale has been named the Acting Comptroller General of Customs, taking over from Hameed Ali. It is important to note that these appointed officials will serve in their respective positions on an interim basis, pending confirmation in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Furthermore, President Tinubu has made several other key appointments, including Col. Adebisi Onasanya as the Brigade of Guards Commander, Lt. Col. Moshood Abiodun Yusuf, Lt. Col. Auwalu Baba Inuwa, Lt. Col. Mohammed J. Abdulkarim, and Lt. Col. Olumide A. Akingbesote, who will assume command roles in various battalions and units.

In the realm of policy coordination and advisory roles, Hadiza Bala Usman has been appointed as the Special Adviser for Policy Coordination, while Hannatu Musa Musawa will serve as the Special Adviser for Culture and Entertainment Economy. Sen. Abdullahi Abubakar Gumel and Hon. (Barr) Olarewaju Kunle Ibrahim have been appointed as Senior Special Assistants for National Assembly Matters, representing the Senate and the House of Representatives, respectively.
