Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara rejected misconduct claims on Monday following rumors of an impending impeachment by the state House of Assembly.

“Let the lawmakers come forward and inform the people of Rivers State what offense I have committed to justify any impeachment,” Fubara told supporters rallied outside the Assembly building.

The governor vowed to keep delivering benefits to Rivers residents, adding he would address the situation fully later.

“I assure the people of Rivers that I remain committed to your well-being. I will speak on this matter at the appropriate time,” Fubara stated.

Tensions erupted Monday when the Assembly ousted House Leader Edison Ehie and served an impeachment notice on Fubara before fleeing as tear gas spread outside.

Speaker Martin Amaewhule led the lawmakers in the surprise moves that sparked chaos in the capital city.

Addressing the protesting crowds, Fubara maintained his innocence against the legislators’ allegations.

The impeachment threat follows a fire at the Assembly headquarters Sunday night. While the cause remains unknown, some link it to escalating disputes between Fubara and former governor Nyesom Wike, now the Federal Capital Territory Minister.

Wike’s falling out with his successor Fubara has stirred political drama in recent months. The impeachment push by lawmakers further inflamed tensions, with Fubara dismissing the accusations today.
