Bernard Sang, a Kenyan athlete, clinched victory at the 9th edition of the Access Bank 2024 Lagos City Marathon, triumphing over approximately 80 other elite marathoners on Saturday morning. He completed the 42km race in 2 hours, 16 minutes, and 49 seconds, securing the top prize of $50,000. Sang outpaced his compatriots Simon Cheprot and Edwin Kiptoo, who finished second and third, earning $40,000 and $30,000, respectively. Notably, Sang had also participated in the 2023 edition, finishing third.
Kebene Chala, a 25-year-old Ethiopian, emerged as the first woman to cross the finish line, claiming the $50,000 prize. Both the male and female winners earned qualification for the marathon event at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
Shehu Muazu achieved the distinction of being the first Nigerian to complete the race, securing a cash prize of N1 million. The marathon commenced at the National Stadium in Surulere and concluded at the Eko Atlantic City in Victoria Island.
