The 10th Senate made history on Thursday, June 27, by extending the implementation of the 2023 Appropriation Act and the 2023 Supplementary Appropriation Act until December 31, 2024.
This extension means the capital components of the 2023 Appropriation Act and the 2023 Supplementary Appropriation Act will run concurrently with the capital allocations in the 2024 Appropriation Act.
The Senate’s resolution followed President Bola Tinubu’s request, which was presented during a plenary session by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele urged the Senate to expedite consideration of the bills by suspending relevant rules. Bamidele emphasized the importance of the extension, noting that on March 20, 2024, the Acts were previously amended to extend the implementation of capital projects to June 30, 2024. However, with the extension set to expire on June 30, many projects remain incomplete.
“You will recall that on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, these Acts were amended to allow for exhaustive implementation of capital projects under the Acts to June 30, 2024. The extension will expire on Sunday, June 30, 2024, and many projects are yet to be completed,” Bamidele stated.
