The Nigerian Army has confirmed the arrest and detention of investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo in connection with illegal oil bunkering activities in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The arrest was disclosed in a statement on Friday by Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, Acting Deputy Director of the 6 Division Army Public Relations.
According to the statement, Soyombo was apprehended during a military operation targeting a notorious gang involved in pipeline vandalism and illegal oil connections in the region.
“Troops tracked the suspects to an illegal oil bunkering site during a carefully planned operation. Multiple arrests were made, including that of Mr. Fisayo Soyombo, who was found at the scene,” the statement read.
The Army clarified that Soyombo, along with other suspects, is currently undergoing preliminary investigations to determine his level of involvement in the activities.
The statement emphasized that his arrest was part of the Army’s intensified operations against oil theft and pipeline vandalism, dismissing allegations circulating on social media about his detention as baseless.
“The 6 Division Nigerian Army remains committed to combating criminal activities, particularly oil theft, to ensure the protection of national resources and increased oil and gas production in the region,” the statement added.
The Army also urged media outlets to ensure accuracy in their reports, reiterating its dedication to transparency and fostering public understanding.
