President Bola Tinubu directed the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, to expedite the release of all minors facing prosecution for alleged involvement in the #EndBadGovernance protests. The directive follows escalating criticism over the treatment of these minors, who were arrested during demonstrations against economic hardship and government policies.
Public backlash intensified following the arraignment of the minors last week, with calls from Northern governors, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), and political figures including Abubakar Atiku and Peter Obi demanding their immediate release.
In response, Tinubu instructed the AGF to secure the minors’ release and tasked the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Nentawe Yilwatda, with ensuring their welfare and safe return to their families. The President emphasized the administration’s commitment to upholding democratic principles and protecting children’s rights.
Minister of Information Mohammed Idris, accompanied by Presidential aides, briefed the press, confirming the President’s commitment to both legal due process and the humanitarian concerns surrounding the minors’ cases. The President also called for an investigation into law enforcement agents involved in the arrests to ensure accountability.
Human rights advocate Femi Falana, SAN, welcomed the President’s directive to release the minors but called for a broader dismissal of charges against all 101 protesters, labeling the treason allegations baseless and harmful to Nigeria’s image.
