President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s security strategy, issuing a firm order to security agencies to intensify efforts in tackling rising insecurity across the country.
The directive was delivered during a high-level security meeting held on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The session was attended by the heads of the armed forces, police, and intelligence agencies, and was followed by a media briefing from the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu.
According to a statement signed by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu expressed deep concern over the continued violence and killings in states such as Borno, Benue, Plateau, and Kwara. He was quoted as declaring: “Enough is enough.”
Ribadu told State House Correspondents that the meeting was an extensive briefing, offering the President a detailed update on the nation’s security landscape. He noted that even while Tinubu was on recent official visits to Paris and London, he remained actively engaged with security agencies and continued to issue instructions.
“Today, we had the opportunity to come and brief him again, and it lasted hours,” Ribadu said. “It was a very detailed briefing, and it was exhaustive.”
Highlighting the need for a bottom-up approach, the NSA said the President directed security operatives to work more closely with state governors, local governments, and communities to address security challenges at the grassroots.
“The issue of insecurity often is not just at the higher levels. It involves the subunits. They are the ones who are directly with the people, especially when some of the challenges border on community problems,” Ribadu explained.
He emphasized the President’s commitment to restoring peace and order across the country, adding, “The President was very worried and concerned at the meeting. He said, ‘Enough is enough’. We are working to ensure that we restore peace and security.”
