Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has been voted out of office in a landmark election, ending his long rule despite support from U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President J. D. Vance.
Opposition leader Péter Magyar secured victory on a reform-driven campaign focused on corruption, economic concerns, and restoring democratic institutions.
The result marks a major political shift in Hungary after more than a decade of Orbán’s dominance and is expected to reshape the country’s domestic and foreign policy direction.
Despite high-profile backing from Trump and Vance, voter fatigue and dissatisfaction with the government played a decisive role in the outcome.
However, uncertainty remains over whether the opposition can secure enough parliamentary strength to reverse key constitutional changes enacted during Orbán’s tenure.
