Romuald Wadagni has won Benin’s presidential election in a decisive landslide, securing 94 percent of the vote according to provisional results released by the electoral commission.
His main challenger, Paul Hounkpe, conceded defeat before the final tally was completed, extending “republican congratulations” and calling for national unity beyond political divisions.
Voter turnout stood at 58.75 percent overall, though participation was uneven, with some urban polling stations recording turnout between 20 and 40 percent. Despite this, election observers described the poll as largely peaceful and well organised.
Wadagni’s victory, backed by outgoing President Patrice Talon, is widely seen as a continuation of current economic and infrastructure policies that have shaped the country over the past decade.
