President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday commended the Nigerian Navy for its 70 years of service in safeguarding the nation’s maritime domain and protecting economic interests.

Speaking at the 2026 International Fleet Review in Lagos to mark the Navy’s 70th anniversary, the President commissioned three naval vessels—NNS Oloibiri, NNS Mambila and NNS Gurara.

Tinubu praised the Navy’s achievements in combating piracy, crude oil theft, illegal fishing, smuggling and other maritime crimes, noting that its operations have boosted oil production, increased government revenue and strengthened investor confidence.

He also lauded the Navy’s contributions to counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations, describing it as an indispensable pillar of national and regional security.

The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the Navy through investments in modern platforms, technology, personnel welfare and capacity development.

Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, attributed recent successes in maritime security to the Federal Government’s support, enhanced surveillance capabilities and improved collaboration among security agencies. He pledged the Navy’s continued commitment to protecting Nigeria’s maritime domain and combating maritime crime.

The event was attended by top government officials, military chiefs, foreign naval delegations and other dignitaries from across the Gulf of Guinea and beyond.
