Hafpor Julius Bjornsson, the Icelandic athlete and actor who plays the impressive ‘Ser Gregor Clegane’ in the enthralling television seriesl, ‘Game Of Thrones’ has been officially announced as the World’s Strongest Man.
Nicknamed ‘The Mountain’, Bjornsson who has been in the top three every year since 2012, took the elusive crown at the annual contest in Manila, following a gruelling series of energy-sapping events spaced over two days.
Standing at si feet, nine inches and weighing 200 kg, the 29-year-old Bjornsson beat previous winner, Brian Shaw of the United States into the third position while Poland’s Mateusz Kieliszkowski placed second.
After competing in other preliminary events including the Atlas Stones, the Car Dead Lift and the Truck Pull, Bjornsson went on to win the Overhead Press and Loading Race in the finals, amassing a total of 51.5 points ahead of Kieliszkowski who grabbed 45 points.
Monday’s feat makes him the first athlete to win the World’s Strongest Man, Europe’s Strongest Man and the Arnold Strongman Classic, created by retired actor and former governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, all in the same year.
A former basketball player, Bjornsson is also the world dead-lifting record holder, having successfully lifted 472 kg of dead weight in March this year.
