Cameroon have won the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations for the first time after defeating tournament debutants Malawi 3-0 in Sunday’s final.
Marie Ngah Manga scored twice, while Naomi Eto added the other goal as the Indomitable Lionesses secured their first WAFCON title after losing their previous three finals to record 10-time champions Nigeria.
Cameroon took control after a strong start from Malawi, with Ngah Manga heading in the opener in the 21st minute. Eto doubled the lead eight minutes later with a fine finish before Ngah Manga completed her brace in the second half with another header.
Malawi struggled to respond despite efforts from the Chawinga sisters, Tabitha and Temwa. Tabitha had a penalty appeal rejected following a VAR review, while goalkeeper Michaely Bihina made a key save to deny her.
The victory marked a historic breakthrough for Cameroon, who failed to qualify for the previous edition of the tournament. Cameroon Football Federation president Samuel Eto’o celebrated the triumph from the stands.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino and CAF president Patrice Motsepe were among the dignitaries who attended the final.
