The Police in Germany on Monday said they have arrested and detained a suspected Islamist radical who once served as bodyguard to the late terrorist, Osama bin Laden.
The arrest of Sami A., a Tunisian national had sparked outrage in April after German media reported that he was receiving welfare benefits even after intelligence agencies had classified him as a potential threat.
According to authorities in the western city of Bochum, the police had requested to detain Sami A. and he did not resist while a top-selling German newspaper, Bild reported, without citing its sources, that Sami A. was now due to be deported.
Germany’s Interior Minister, Horst Seehofer has already ordered immigration authorities in the country to expedite proceedings that would facilitate Sami A’s deportation.
German authorities have over the years tried to deport the man, who has reportedly lived in Bochum since 1997.
