The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has launched an investigation into controversial Nigerian singer Speed Darlington following the emergence of a viral video in which he appeared to claim he had a sexual encounter with a 15-year-old girl.
The video, which quickly gained traction on social media, provoked widespread condemnation as viewers accused the artist of publicly admitting to an unlawful act involving a minor. The disturbing footage sparked outrage across various platforms, prompting calls for immediate investigation and legal action.
In response to the backlash, Speed Darlington dismissed the confession as fictitious, claiming it was fabricated for entertainment purposes and intended to generate attention for his new music. “I need controversy to eat,” he stated, insisting the claim was part of a promotional stunt.
Despite his explanation, law enforcement and advocacy agencies have taken the matter seriously.
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) was the first to publicly address the video. In a statement, the agency acknowledged the viral content but explained that its jurisdiction is restricted to Lagos State, and the location of the alleged incident was not specified in the video.
“The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) is aware of the disturbing video currently circulating online, in which a popular entertainer allegedly admits to engaging in unlawful sexual activity with a minor,” the agency said.
“While the individual in question did not specify the location of the incident during the Instagram Live session, we must clarify that the DSVA’s jurisdiction is limited to Lagos State.”
The agency announced that it had referred the case to NAPTIP for further investigation, aligning with its commitment to ensuring justice in cases involving sexual violence and child abuse.
NAPTIP confirmed receipt of the case on Wednesday and stated that its Cybercrime Response Team had already begun reviewing the content.
“The NAPTIP Cybercrime Response Team has commenced investigations into the disturbing Instagram live video and other videos made by the same individual. We at NAPTIP are committed to a world where children are safe and free from all forms of violence,” the agency stated via its official X (formerly Twitter) account.
The agency also reminded the public of the seriousness of child exploitation and the implications of such confessions — real or fabricated — on national efforts to protect children and combat trafficking and abuse.
