The Kaduna State government has barred officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) from erecting any checkpoints in Kaduna and other urban centres in the state.

This directive was contained in a statement released this Wednesday by the Special Assistant to Governor Nasir El-Rufai on Media and Publicity, Mr. Samuel Aruwan. He said the decision was taken by the State Security Council after a meeting in which it reviewed complains from the public against the road marshals.

He said: “The council acted following complains that FRSC officials were acting in a way reminiscent of the VIO that was dissolved by the state following widespread unease at their acts of disrespect for the public and penchant for extortion.”

According to the statement, the FRSC have henceforth, been barred from indiscriminately stopping vehicles for inspection to enable them concentrate on their activities of “ensuring safe travel on highways such as the Abuja-Kaduna expressway.”

It further said: “The security council, therefore has mandated security agencies to ensure compliance with these directives.”

The meeting of the security council was chaired by the governor, and had in attendance his deputy, Mr. Barnabas Bala as well as heads of military and paramilitary agencies in the state.
