Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has appointed actor-turned-politician and African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo as his spokesperson, weeks after the lawyer openly criticised the party’s choice of a vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
Announcing the appointment on his X account on Thursday, Okonkwo thanked Atiku for the confidence reposed in him, describing the appointment as a demonstration of the former vice president’s inclusive leadership style and willingness to resolve disagreements through dialogue.
Okonkwo disclosed that consultations with Atiku and other ADC leaders addressed concerns over the political interests of the South-East within the framework of the Electoral Act, 2026, expressing confidence that the region’s interests had been safeguarded despite existing legal and political challenges.
He also acknowledged the contributions of Kashim Imam, former ADC National Chairman Ralphs Nwosu, and Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties, Ekene Onwuka, toward strengthening the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
The appointment comes shortly after Okonkwo criticised reports that the ADC was considering a South-South candidate for the vice-presidential slot, warning that such a move could further sideline the South-East, which he noted has not produced either the president or vice president since 1999.
