Nigeria’s House of Representatives on Wednesday dropped a motion on the need for the Federal Government to present records of the funds and assets it has so far recovered from various individuals and organizations in its war against corruption.
The motion, sponsored by Hon. Uchechukwu Nnam-Obi, representing Ahoada East/Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Federal Constituency of Rivers State, was withdrawn without his prior knowledge, a decision that resulted in his walking out of the Green Chamber.
In the motion, as contained in the Order Paper, Nnam-Obi had argued that it was necessary for the Federal government to furnish the National Assembly with the full details of all recovered loots so that Nigerians can keep faith with the anti-corruption crusade of the Buhari administration.
In the motion, the lawmaker had submitted: “We have to take cognisance of the fact that considering the importance of the recovered funds to the revival of the nation’s economy and the interest shown by many Nigerians in the matter, there is need for the Federal Government to submit to the National Assembly, reports on the amount and assets so far recovered and how they are being ploughed back into the economy.”
The motion was read by the Speaker of the House, Yakubu Dogara rather than the sponsor and it was Hon. Bode Ayorinde, the Acting Chairman, Rules and Business Committee who was asked to proceed and he promptly moved for the withdrawal of the motion without giving any reasons.
