At least eight persons were reportedly killed and 10 others critically injured on Thursday night when suspected Fulani herdsmen attacked Jebu-Maingo village in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Reports say the attack which took place at about 9:00pm on Thursday also left nothing less than 20 houses burnt while property and foodstuff worth millions of naira were also destroyed.
ASP Tyoper Matthew, the Plateau State Police Public Relations Officer, while confirming the attack said three persons lost their lives, another eight were injured while 20 houses and foodstuff were destroyed. However, eye witnesses reportedly put the casualty figure at about eight. Matthew said:
“The Command received a distress call at about 9 pm on Thursday that some gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen were attacking a village at Jebu-Maingo in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.
“Immediately, the Divisional Police Officer mobilized his men to the scene and also the Command mobilized some armed men to go for reinforcement. On arrival, when the assailants sighted the police, they deserted the village.
“After that we discovered that three people lost their lives, two have been identified as Danlami of Kwal District, Emmanuel Audu of Jebu-Maingo and the third person is yet to be identified.
“Twenty houses were set ablaze and persons sustained gunshot injuries and were taken to Enos Hospital, Bassa for treatment,” ASP Matthew told newsmen.
Member representing Bassa/Jos North Constituency in the State Assembly, Hon. Kwande has condemned the attack and called on security agencies to fish out the perpetrators of the dastardly act and make them face the full wrath of the law.
