Uchechi Kanu, wife of the fugitive leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, says the South-East of Nigeria will boycott the 2019 elections if the Federal Government fails to produce the separatist leader.
Speaking during an interview with the Igbo service of the British Broadcasting Service (BBC) on Monday, Uchechi dismissed insinuations that Kanu’s conduct as leader of IPOB was illegal and treasonable.
She said: “Yes, Nnamdi Kanu’s issue should be the number one thing. Where is he? You need to provide him, at least tell us where he is. You need to at least do something before you run an election, otherwise we are not going to vote
“He was trapped in the house when they went to invade the house and that was when he called me. He said can you hear the gun shots? I panicked and I started screaming ‘what’s going on?’ And he said to me, the military men are here. They are shooting. Loads and loads of people lost their lives and now, Nnamdi Kanu is nowhere to be found.”
Uchechi, who is currently based in London maintained that her husband was in the custody of the Nigerian Army even though he has not committed any crime.
“What makes it illegal? Why should that be treasonable? Someone asking for self-determination? Why is that a crime? It’s not a crime,” she added.
