Egypt’s military court on Tuesday convicted former Chief of the nation’s anti-graft agency, Hesham Genena for insulting the Armed Forces and sentenced him to five years in prison.
Genena was arrested in February following incendiary comments he made in a television interview in which he alleged that the country’s former Chief of Staff, Sami Annan was in possession of documents that could incriminate the country’s leadership.
Annan had been arrested a month earlier shortly after he announced his intention to challenge President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi in a March Presidential election for alleged forgery and making inciting comments against the military.
One of Genena’s defence lawyers, Hossaam Lofty however says Tuesday’s verdict against his client will be appealed in due course.
