The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League defending champions, Spain’s Real Madrid and Germany’s Bayern Munich on Wednesday booked their semi-final spots in the competition.

Madrid needed a last-minute Cristiano Ronaldo penalty to send them through to the last four after Juventus had levelled the quarter final tie on aggregate with three unreplied goals, with two coming from Mandzukic and one from Blaise Matuidi.

Five-time winners of the competition and German Bundesliga hot shots, Bayern Munich were held to a barren draw by hard-fighting Sevilla of Spain to seal a 2-1 win on aggregate.

Earlier in Tuesday’s other round of eight match-ups, Italy’s AS Roma pulled off a sensational and historic comeback to overturn a three-goal first leg deficit to send one of the tournament’s favourites, FC Barcelona packing, having lost the first leg at the Camp Nou by 4-1.

In the other all- English tie of the round, Liverpool fought hard to dump high-flying Manchester City out of the tournament, coming from a goal down to win 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium and complete the semi-finals line up.

The draw to decide the semi-final fixtures of the Champions League takes place on Friday, April 14 at the UEFA Headquarters in Sion, Switzerland, starting by 12 pm.
