The Federal Government has commenced the reconstruction of the Carter Bridge in Lagos, officially handing over the project to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).

Speaking during the flag-off ceremony on Wednesday, Minister of Works Dave Umahi said the project is aimed at improving safety, traffic flow, and connectivity in Nigeria’s commercial capital.

Umahi noted that the reconstruction forms part of the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to rehabilitate critical transport infrastructure nationwide and deliver durable road and bridge projects capable of supporting economic growth.

Representing Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Senator Ngwu Osita described the project as vital to the economy of Lagos and the country.

Chairman of the House Committee on Works, Akin Alabi, also welcomed the intervention, saying it would address long-standing structural and traffic concerns associated with the bridge.

The government said recent structural assessments showed the bridge required comprehensive reconstruction to meet modern engineering and safety standards.
