The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Thursday say it is saddening to note that despite the several bailouts, loan collected and over N200 billion so far collected in monthly allocations, the Kogi State government is still owing workers between 8–38 months salary arrears.
Speaking in Lokoja, the state capital during the 7th Quadrennial State Congress held at the Kafas Multipurpose Hall, the NLC Chairman, Ayuba Wabba said workers in the state had been acutely battered and reduced to mere skeletons walking the streest without hope or succor due to the development.
Wabba said due to the non-payment of salaries, workers in the state have been turned to beggars, with some suffering from various ailments which had resulted in several deaths.
The organized labour said the worst hit among the workers were the local government staff, some of whom were owed over 52 months salary arrears while those paid were paid in miserable percentages.
The NLC therefore pleaded with the Kogi State government to make the monthly payment of salaries a priority.
It also appealed to President Muhammad Buhari to intervene in the release of the second batch of the ₦30.8 billion bailout fund to the state to facilitate the prompt settlement of all arrears.
