The Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Katsina State, Shittu S. Shittu on Thursday narrowly escaped being lynched by an angry mob at the conference room of Government House , Katsina.
The incident occurred when the immediate past Director -General of the Small and Medium Scale Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), Bature Umar Masari paid a solidarity visit to the Government House shortly after his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.
Trouble started when Shittu, in his opening remarks claimed that he did not know much about Bature, who is Governor Aminu Bello Masari’s nephew and was accompanied on the visit by his supporters from the PDP.
“I cannot say that I know you very well but I know you were in PDP and you campaigned against us when we were in the struggle. I hope you have not come here to deceive us and go away,” Shittu had said.
Apparently taking Shittu’s remark as a slight on the personality of Bature Masari, the supporters threw caution to the wind and descended on him.
It took the timely intervention of security personnel who smuggled Shittu out of the council chambers to curtail the mob action, which took place right in the presence of the state governor and other senior government and party officials.
Bature was a two-term chairman of Kafur Local Government Council and later Interim Administrator for the council before he was appointed SMEDAN’s DG during the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.
