Tensions have emerged within the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) following allegations that its Vice Presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, is attempting to dominate the party structure in the North-West.

In a joint statement, the party’s North-West Vice Chairman, Mohammed Rabiu Serina, and Kano State Chairman, Hussaini Isa Mariga, accused the Kwankwaso bloc of sidelining non-Kwankwasiyya members and restricting their participation in elective contests.

They claimed that although an earlier power-sharing agreement brokered by NDC National Leader Seriake Dickson allocated 60 per cent of party structure to Kwankwaso’s supporters and 40 per cent to existing members, recent developments suggest the agreement is being undermined.

The officials also alleged that candidates loyal to the Kwankwasiyya Movement were being replaced in Kano State, prompting claims of internal restructuring of both federal and state assembly lists.

However, the Kwankwasiyya Movement has rejected the allegations. Its spokesperson, Habib Mai-Lemo, insisted that all candidates emerged through due process, either by consensus or primaries conducted in line with party and INEC guidelines.

He added that no formal complaints were received during the process and that the group had not seen any official document confirming the reported changes, stressing that the matter is being treated as unverified for now.

The dispute highlights growing internal tensions within the NDC over control of party structures ahead of future elections.
