The Presidency on Monday assured Nigerians that it will conduct credible, free and fair elections in 2019, citing the United Nation’s prediction that the polls will be credible and violence free.

The Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu made the declaration in a statement he released on Monday in Abuja.

Garba noted that the UN’s prediction which he said was made by Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambers, the Head of UN Office for West Africa during a television interview, was an indication that the world had confidence in the administration of President Buhari.

His words: “The Buhari government does not believe in cheap propaganda. It is not about responding to attacks, false allegations and insinuations of the PDP or of the still very active media machinery of the previous government.

“We believe in taking active steps to ensure that the future of Nigeria is better than it is today and we are glad to see that the United Nation has acknowledged this.”

He continued: “Under the government of President Buhari, a number of credible elections have been conducted in states and local governments across Nigeria and so far, there has been no cause for fear or worry.”

He stressed that the 2015 election which witnessed the historic election of President Buhari were credible simply because of the presence and diligence of Professor Attahiru Jega, the then Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Former Special Assistant to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri had on Sunday written a letter to the International community titled ‘President Buhari Has Neither The Intention Nor Capacity to Hold Credible Election’ in which he warned that the perceived fascist disposition of the President and his tendency to silence his opposition portended danger for democracy in Nigeria.
