Following a perfectly executed strike on Wednesday night, American President, Donald Trump on Thursday declared that his mission to decapitate the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has been accomplished.

In an early morning tweet, Trump praised US allies and declared that his government would commence the immediate withdrawal of American troops from Syria.

“A perfectly-executed strike last night. Thank you to France and the United Kingdom for their wisdom and the power of their fine Military. Could not have had a better result. Mission Accomplished!” he tweeted.

Trump had also released a video on Wednesday evening touting his decision to bring the troops home, in what looked like a bid to make  a pre-Christmas political boost.

“Our boys, our young women, our men, they’re all coming back and they’re coming back now. We won and that’s the way we want it. And that’s the way they want it,” Trump said in the video.

However, Trump’s sudden and rapid decision to pull American troops out of Syria has confounded many of his top aides as the decision is seen as a move that appears to clash with the focal point of  his Middle East policy of containing Iran’s regional influence since it could leave a vacuum for Tehran and other outside nations to fill.

Trump has however defended his decision by saying that it didn’t come to him as a surprise, arguing that it was not in the interest of the United States to be the ‘Policeman of the Middle East’.

It is also no secret that Trump believes American troops should not be fighting what he sees as other people’s wars as he tends to view alliances as simply a chance for America’s traditional friends to rip off the US.

As events unfold, Trump’s critics inside Washington, his own party, the military and around the world are already portraying the move as a massive strategic blunder that could open the way for an ISIS rebound.

They say the President’s decision not to schedule a major address to the American people to explain the strategic foundation of his withdrawal added to the impression of a leader who is uninterested in the details of grave decisions.

Trump’s decision to ditch US leverage in Syria, which fulfills one of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s goals is also expected to spark fresh speculations about Trump’s motives as his relationship with Kremlin comes under increasing scrutiny.

However, unlike many of the Trump’s most shocking decisions, the Syria withdrawal order did not override constitutional norms and was well within the guardrails of mainstream political thought on overseas deployments.
