In a bid to revive the Ajaokuta Steel Company and the National Iron Ore Mining Company, Itakpe, traditional rulers from the Ebira ethnic group and Senator representing Kogi Central have joined forces. They called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the re-concession of the National Iron Ore Mining Company, stressing the need for caution and statesmanship in handling the matter.

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan initiated a motion to probe alleged corruption and inefficiency at both companies, urging a detailed investigation from 2008 to the present. Concerns were raised regarding the $496 million payment to Mr. Pramod Mittal by the Federal Government in September 2022, purportedly as settlement over contractual disputes.

Stakeholders advocated for a review of existing policies and laws on steel development, dissolution of sole administratorship at Ajaokuta Steel Company, and the establishment of a proper management and governing board. This proposed structure includes representatives from professional bodies and supervising ministries to ensure good corporate governance, efficiency, and accountability.

The monarchs emphasized the importance of cooperation between legislators, the Minister of Steel Development, management of the companies, and stakeholders. They highlighted the potential benefits of resuscitating these projects, such as employment generation, technological advancement, and economic growth.

Acknowledging President Bola Tinubu’s efforts in restoring the Steel Development Ministry and appointing an indigene of Kogi State to lead its initiatives, the traditional rulers urged for collective support towards realizing the Ajaokuta Dream. They emphasized the need to deescalate controversies and distractions to facilitate government efforts and attract potential investors to breathe life into these crucial projects.
