The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a landslide victory in the just-concluded local government elections in Rivers State, winning 20 chairmanship seats, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) claimed only two.

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) also declared APC winners in councillorship elections across 20 local governments, leaving the PDP with just three council seats.

This marks the first time since the return of democracy in 1999 that the APC has gained political dominance in Rivers State, long considered a PDP stronghold.

Announcing the results on Sunday at the commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt, RSIEC Chairman, Dr. Michael Odey, confirmed that no other political party featured in either the chairmanship or councillorship contests.

Voter turnout was mixed across the state. While rural communities saw high participation, some urban centres such as Port Harcourt City, Obio/Akpor, and Akukutoro witnessed both large crowds in certain polling units and very low turnout in others.

According to the list of winners released by RSIEC, some of the newly elected chairmen are returning for a second term, having previously served under the administration of former Governor Nyesom Wike.
