At least 11 people have been killed following reprisal attacks by suspected bandits on villages in Katsina State, worsening security concerns in Nigeria’s northwest.
The attacks targeted communities in Kankia Local Government Area, where gunmen reportedly struck in retaliation for recent security operations against criminal groups in the region.
Residents said the assailants stormed the villages, killing people and causing widespread panic among locals. The incident has further heightened tension in an area already grappling with persistent banditry and violent raids.
The Katsina State Police Command confirmed the attacks and said efforts are underway to track down those responsible. Commissioner of Police, Ali Umar-Fage, has ordered intensified security operations, including patrols and bush-combing exercises across affected areas.
Security authorities believe the assault may be linked to recent crackdowns on bandit groups, including operations that led to the recovery of stolen livestock and the neutralisation of some suspects.
Additional security personnel have been deployed to restore calm and prevent further violence, while residents have been urged to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement agencies.
