The presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Obi, on May 30, 2026, formally accepted his nomination, declaring that “a New Nigeria is Possible” and urging national unity and urgent reforms across governance, security, and the economy.

Speaking in Abuja at the party’s acceptance event, Obi expressed gratitude to party leaders, including the National Chairman Seriake Dickson, the National Secretary, the National Working Committee, and supporters who attended from across the country.

He said his candidacy represents a collective aspiration rather than personal ambition, stressing that Nigeria stands at a critical juncture marked by insecurity, economic hardship, and declining public trust in governance.

Obi warned that ethnic, religious, and political divisions continue to undermine national progress, calling for unity and shared purpose. “Nigeria cannot advance while fragmented. Our diversity must be a strength, not a weakness,” he said.

On security, he noted worsening conditions, citing global assessments ranking Nigeria among the countries most affected by terrorism in recent years. He contrasted this with Nigeria’s earlier reputation as a leading contributor to UN peacekeeping missions across Africa and beyond, where its troops played significant roles in stabilisation efforts.

Obi emphasized that restoring security remains central to national recovery, stating that no country can thrive when citizens live in fear, and reaffirmed that the protection of lives and property is the core duty of government.
