Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar says he will look into the report of the 2015 Constitutional Conference on restructuring if elected as Nigeria’s president.
Speaking through his media aide, Phrank Shuaibu over the weekend, Atiku said local governments would assume their status as independent tiers of government as stipulated in the country’s constitution.
Atiku further disclosed that the report of the 2015 Constitutional Conference on restructuring would be looked into by relevant stakeholders, adding that only appropriate decisions that would be of national interest would be taken.
“The autonomy of the states and local governments, both of which are closer to their people than the central government in Abuja, will result in more effective decisions that would be more potent and impactful, in terms of results and effects,” Atiku said.
On the modalities for his planned restructuring, Atiku explained that the role of providing the required direction for the economy, defense and national security, internal law and order, currency, international affairs and foreign policy, customs, citizenship and immigration, firearms and related matters would be retained by the Federal Government.
