The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu says the electoral laws in Nigeria need to be regularized as they create uncertainty and undermine the confidence of the Nigerian electorate.
Speaking at the 12th National Delegates Conference of the Forum of State Independent Electoral Commissions of Nigeria held in Jos, the Plateau State capital on Wednesday, Yakubu said all the problems witnessed in the nation’s electoral process must be addressed.
The INEC boss, who was represented by the Commission’s National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye said a new legal framework must be put in place to address such irregularities.
While noting that party nominations have a tremendous impact on the preparations and conduct of elections, Yakubu solicited for an electoral law which would ensure the settlement of all pre-election matters at least 60 days before the commencement of an election.
