Boko Haram insurgents have reportedly sacked a village called Shawa in the Askira Local Government Area of Borno State. Punch newspaper of Nigeria which reported the story quoted the leader of a youth vigilance group in the area as saying that the attackers who sacked the village on Sunday rode on bicycles.

The youth vigilance leader, Istifanus Apagu said he visited the village after the attack and discovered that the entire place had been burnt down. He said many residents were injured and that they all fled into the bush as Boko Haram unleashed the attack.

Punch quoted Apagu who is leader of the Civilian JTF in Mussa District as saying: “They came on bicycles around 4:00 a.m. on Sunday morning while people were sleeping and started opening fire on the helpless civilians as the villagers fled into bushes but many were critically injured. No lives were lost but the whole village was set ablaze and nothing was left standing. In fact, they went away with six bicycles.”
