Breaking news from the Supreme Court as Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has been affirmed as the validly elected Governor of Osun State. In a lead judgement delivered by Justice Emmanuel Agim, the apex court dismissed an appeal lodged against Adeleke’s election victory by former governor Adegboyega Oyetola, who was the gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

The court held that Oyetola’s allegations of over-voting in 774 polling units in the state were unfounded, as he failed to produce any evidence of the Bimodal Voters Accreditation System, BVAS, a machine used in any of the polling units to prove his claims. The apex court further held that since the BVAS contains a record of accredited voters, it is the only direct and primary record of voters accredited at polling units on election day.

Despite Oyeyola’s attempt to prove his allegations with purported expert witnesses, the Supreme Court found no reason to set aside the verdict of the Court of Appeal, which upheld Adeleke’s election victory. This decision marks a significant victory for the PDP in Osun State and underscores the importance of credible evidence in election disputes.
