President Bola Tinubu convened a significant meeting with Senate President Ahmad Lawan and Speaker of the House of Representatives Femi Gbajabiamila on Thursday at the Aso Villa in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital. The private gathering took place shortly after the President’s discussions with the nation’s service chiefs and heads of intelligence agencies at the State House.

Following the meeting, Speaker Gbajabiamila expressed optimism about fostering a mutually beneficial relationship between the 10th National Assembly and the executive branch. He emphasized the importance of optimizing the function of checks and balances to ensure effective governance.

Controversy has emerged ahead of the June inauguration of the 10th National Assembly due to the party organ’s decision to zone key positions. The Senate President position has been allocated to the South-South, with Senator Godswill Akpabio from Akwa Ibom being considered. The position of Deputy Senate President has been zoned to the North-West, with Senator Barau Jibrin from Kano being mentioned. These decisions continue to generate debates and discussions among stakeholders.

Other notable appointments include Abass Tajudeen from Kaduna as the Speaker of the House of Representatives, representing the North-West, and Ben Kalu from Abia as the Deputy Speaker from the South-East region.

The meeting between President Tinubu, Senate President Lawan, and Speaker Gbajabiamila underscores the significance of inter-branch collaboration in Nigeria’s political landscape as the country moves forward.
